Why electric fencing?

Electric fencing is a safe and effective method used to control livestock and deter pests. An electric fence is simple to install as a temporary or permanent setup and suits a variety of situations/animals. The most important part of the electric fencing is the electric fence energiser. The energiser works by sending a high-voltage pulse of electric current. When an animal makes contact with the electrified fence-line they complete the circuit and this delivers the shock. The shock is short but unpleasant which deters the animals from continuing to make contact with the electric fencing.

Which energiser do I need?

This depends on the circumstances – If there is a sheltered and accessible mains supply nearby then a mains energiser is the best choice for fixed fencing. It is more economical than a battery energiser (unless solar is suitable).

If the energiser can be left in a sunny and secure location then a solar energiser is a great way to make the most out of the free solar power. ShockRite solars are lightweight and portable making them suitable for temporary fencing, remote locations as well as fixed fencing.

If the location is not secure and sunny then a 12V battery energiser is suitable in the same situations as the solar energiser (temporary fencing, remote locations, fixed fencing).

How powerful should the energiser be?

The required energiser depends on various factors such as: the animal to protect/deter, the length of electric fencing in use, and level of vegetation. The energiser needs to be strong enough to provide necessary protection, but not excessive to needs. An excessively powerful energiser would cause increased costs, and for battery energisers this would also mean frequent trips to recharge the battery.

To help with this each product listing gives an estimation of the distance of electric fencing that we recommend the energiser to cover; the products can be filtered by animal (but if you can’t see the animal you’re after then select an animal with a similar coat); and there’s also a handy ShockRite energiser comparison chart showing an overview of the animals and distance recommended for each energiser.

When considering electric fencing the ideal level of vegetation is always none. This is because any contact of vegetation (such as grass, shrubs, hanging branches etc) with the fence-line will reduce the current running through it, and in turn reduce the shock delivered to the animal. This makes the electric fence less effective therefore reducing the protection of the area.

What else does an electric fence set up need?

The main other items needed are electric fence insulators, and electric fence tape or wire (otherwise known as the conductors). The wire or tape conducts the current along and when it comes into contact with an animal this completes the circuit and causes the shock, deterring the animal from the fencing. Insulators are used to protect the fence-line from loss of current through contact with the posts etc and to create the ideal perimeter. Tape insulators are to be used with electric fence tape, and ring insulators are to be used with electric fence wire or rope.

Each ShockRite electric fence energiser comes with both live and earth electric fence cables, as well as an earth stake. The red live cable connects from the energiser to the fence-line, and the green earth cable connects to the earth stake (although there can be variations).
